Tips for Navigating the World of Home Building

When my wife and I had finally saved up enough cash to move from an apartment to a house, we were very underwhelmed with the homes available in our local market. We weren't sure if we could afford to build a new home, but we spoke to a local contractor and decided it was actually a great option for us. We signed another year lease at our apartment complex and had a lot of fun choosing all of the options for our new home. We learned a lot about the home building experience during this time and, since we loved the experience so much, we decided to create a blog to share our tips and tricks for navigating the world of home building with other people who need the help designing their new homes. Come back often for new posts!

Water pouring into your house, whether it's from a burst pipe or a flood, is never a good thing. Water can cause all kinds of damage when it shows up, but it can continue to cause damage even after it has been cleaned up. If you have water coming into your house, you may need a water restoration company come in and do the clean-up and repair. Until the restoration company can get to your house, there are things that you can do to help make things easier.

Cut the Electricity

One thing that you can do is to cut the electricity. That is going to do two things for you. One is that it can help save your electronics. Cutting any power to them can help to stop the water from damaging all the circuits inside the device. Turning off the electricity can also help to stop short circuits in your house's wiring. If the water is pouring into only one room, then you can just go into that room and pull all the plugs. That will break any active circuits. Then you can to your circuit breaker and make sure that you turn off the circuit breakers for that particular room. If you have water pouring in from a flood outside, you might want to completely turn the power off to your entire house. There is generally a switch on your circuit breaker that will let you kill power to the entire house. No matter how you are cutting the electricity, make sure that you are being safe. Water and electricity don't mix, and you don't want to get hurt.

Start Drying Out

Once the water stops flooding into your house, then you should start drying the water up. The sooner you can get the water out, the better off you are. You are probably going to have less damage, but you are also going to have a lower risk of things like mold and mildew. You can start drying by doing things like getting a wet/dry vac and sucking the water out. You can also open the windows and gets some fans so that you get air moving, and get dehumidifiers to help draw the extra moisture out of the air.

If you have water coming into your house, you want to do everything you can to get the water out and make sure that you can get your house restored to the way it was before.
