Signs You Need To Replace Your Windows

Tips for Navigating the World of Home Building

When my wife and I had finally saved up enough cash to move from an apartment to a house, we were very underwhelmed with the homes available in our local market. We weren't sure if we could afford to build a new home, but we spoke to a local contractor and decided it was actually a great option for us. We signed another year lease at our apartment complex and had a lot of fun choosing all of the options for our new home. We learned a lot about the home building experience during this time and, since we loved the experience so much, we decided to create a blog to share our tips and tricks for navigating the world of home building with other people who need the help designing their new homes. Come back often for new posts!

Signs You Need To Replace Your Windows

As a homeowner, you want to be sure that you are doing everything you can to keep your home functioning well. However, one of the areas of vulnerability in your home is also one of the areas that are often taken for granted as serving their performance. That area is your windows. There are many ways that you can tell your windows are not functioning as well as they should and may need replacement. Get to know some of these signs so you can be sure you get replacement windows installed as soon as possible.

The Frame Is Warped or Pulling Away

One of the ways to tell that you need to replace your windows is when the frame of your window does not look quite right. If the wood is warped and the plane of the window is no longer straight, for example, this is a sign that you need new windows. That warping will likely only get worse and it causes air to leak in and out of your house, making your windows much less energy efficient.

Alternatively, if the window frame is pulling away from the walls of your home, this too creates a problem with uncontrolled energy transfer between the outdoors and the interior of your home. Inspect all of the windows in your home and check to see if you notice any of these window frame issues. If you do, call a window replacement professional to provide a professional assessment and potentially, to replace your windows entirely.

Your Energy Bills Have Gotten Worse

If you are one of those homeowners that like to keep track of your energy bills each month and the fluctuations in those bills, then you may notice right away when your energy costs are increasing steadily. One of the main reasons that your energy bills might be increasing more than you would like is that your windows are not properly protecting your home from the elements.

Once you notice your sky-high energy bills, you can inspect all of your windows for the temperature (feel) around them. Stand next to the windows and see if you notice a draft or if the area around your window is significantly colder or hotter than the rest of a room. If this is the case, your windows are more than likely the cause of your energy bill woes and will need to be replaced.

Knowing these signs that your windows need to be replaced, you can be sure you get replacement windows as soon as possible if you notice any of these problems with your home.
