Tips for Navigating the World of Home Building

When my wife and I had finally saved up enough cash to move from an apartment to a house, we were very underwhelmed with the homes available in our local market. We weren't sure if we could afford to build a new home, but we spoke to a local contractor and decided it was actually a great option for us. We signed another year lease at our apartment complex and had a lot of fun choosing all of the options for our new home. We learned a lot about the home building experience during this time and, since we loved the experience so much, we decided to create a blog to share our tips and tricks for navigating the world of home building with other people who need the help designing their new homes. Come back often for new posts!

Ideas For Remodeling Your Kitchen's Walk-In Pantry

Your kitchen pantry provides storage for food, cookware, china, and kitchen appliances. With the right touches, this space can be a beautiful addition to your kitchen. If you have a walk-in pantry in need of an update, here are a few options to consider as you plan your remodeling project.

Install Counter Space

If your kitchen is short on counter space, consider adding a section of counter in the pantry. Have your contractor run wiring in the pantry for outlets, and use these extra workspace for gadgets that might take up too much room in your kitchen, such as stand mixers, toaster ovens, or blenders. You can use these small appliances in the pantry, and then close the doors to keep them out of sight so your kitchen remains free from clutter.

Add Matching Cabinets

Your pantry is an extension of your kitchen, and you can create a cohesive look by installing matching cabinets in the pantry area. Consider adding upper cabinets above pantry shelving, which can be used to store fine china or extra cookware. This expands your available storage space without leaving these items exposed to dust and dirt. Work with your contractor to find the right arrangement within the pantry to make the space as functional and beautiful as possible, and consider extra touches, such as under-cabinet lighting, to make this space truly feel like it blends with your kitchen.

Use Pullout Drawers

If your existing pantry has deep shelves, you may find that it's hard to get to items stored at the back of each shelf. You can overcome this issue by having your contractor install pullout shelves and drawers. These additions to your pantry make it easy to see and reach everything you have stored away. Use smaller drawers for heavier items, such as cans of soup or jars of pasta, and save large drawers for dry cereal, breakfast bars, or daytime snacks.

Create A Small Office

Whether you use a computer in your kitchen for storing recipes or balancing your monthly budget, keeping your bills and laptop on the counter can create clutter. Instead, have your contractor install a small office space you can use inside the pantry. This might consist of a simple shelf to hold your computer and a few storage drawers. Have your contractor install a few small shelves in this area that can be used to store cookbooks and recipe boxes, and be sure that there is an electrical outlet you can use to charge your laptop or tablet in this office area.
