Practical and energy-efficient duct pressure control for zoned systemsThe ZoneHandler uses phase modulation to vary blower motor speed in response to changes in duct pressure, as measured by a pressure sensor mounted in the supply plenum. When one or more zones close, pressure increases and the ZoneHandler decreases blower speed accordingly. When a zone opens, pressure decreases and blower speed increases. The result of this speed control is that duct pressure remains at the set point (factory set at about .3" static pressure, but adjustable by the installer). Delivered air volume at the open zones remains constant. This eliminates the high-speed air noise associated with hard-to-install and inefficient dump zones, or barometric damper short-circuits. When neither heating nor cooling is called for, the ZoneHandler can be set up (by means of an optional relay) to continue blower operation, at a quiet and unobtrusive minimum speed that you set, providing comfortable and continuous air circulation during times when the blower would normally be inactive and useless. This keeps Filters, EAC's, Germicidal UV Systems and any other accessories working 24/7, and at peak efficiency because of the reduced blower speed.
